Natural Sleep Solutions

Do you have difficulty
sleeping? Our lives are so busy, we
find ourselves going non-stop until we are exhausted then we drop into bed to
find that we can’t sleep! We lay
awake in bed reviewing the day, thinking about things we didn’t get done,
things we will do tomorrow, and so on. Luckily,
there are natural ways to induce sleep without the use of sleeping pills.
I’ve learned a lot about
sleep patterns from my two year old daughter.
I’ve learned that a good night time routine is the key to a good
night’s rest. A night time routine
for an adult is actually very similar to that of a two year old.
You can start by taking a bath, reading a book, or drinking some herbal
tea, whatever helps you relax. The
key is to start your routine about an hour before you want to go to sleep.
Over time having a routine will signal your body that bed time is
approaching and you will find it easier to go to sleep.
Once you’re in bed, if
your mind starts racing about things you forgot to do, things you have to do
tomorrow, etc turn on the light and write these things down.
Then tell yourself you will read your notes first thing in the morning
and there’s nothing you can do about any of those things now.
Repeat this process as many times as necessary, it really works!
Once you’ve written them down, focus on your breathing and allow your
thoughts to float away. Tell
yourself you can resume worrying in the morning if absolutely necessary but
refuse to do it in bed.
Essential oils can also be
used to induce sleep. Chamomile,
lavender, frankincense or neroli oils are calming and relaxing, and are known to
promote sleep. Pick the one you like the most and put a couple of drops in an
oil burner, add 3-4 drops in a warm bath before bed or add a couple of drops to
water and mist your pillow.
If you are still having
trouble, herbs can help relax your mind and body.
The most popular sleep time herb is chamomile.
A cup of chamomile tea can be very relaxing.
However, if you want something to make you drowsy, you’ll need
something a little stronger.
My favorite herbal formula
to induce sleep is Catnip, Chamomile, Kava Kava, Passion Flower, and Skullcap.
These herbs work together nicely to help you drift off to sleep. And
you won’t have that groggy feeling in the morning like you do when taking
sleeping pills. You can mix these
herbs together to make an herbal tea or take them in tincture form. If
you make a tea, one cup should do the trick.
For a tincture, you can take one teaspoon every 15-30 minutes leading up
to your bed time.
Hopefully these tips will
help you sleep better. Daily
exercise always helps too. Check out our website for essential oils, bulk herbs,
