Spring TonicsCultures from all over the world have created and used cleansing tonics for centuries, especially in the spring. Spring tonics were very popular back when our winter diets consisted of whatever stores we could preserve in the fall. Spring tonics were believed to remove impurities from our blood, purify the system and give us more energy for the hard work to be done during growing season. Spring
tonics are still a wonderful way to rid your body of built up toxins and
start preparing for the active warm days ahead. Most
spring tonics are used to stimulate the kidney, liver and gall
bladder since these organs tend to accumulate a lot of waste
during the winter from being so sedentary and eating a heavy diet.
A tonic
herb is focused on a particular part of the body and is used to
bring it to a proper balance for normal functioning. To read the full Spring Tonics article, click here. We've put together a few different spring tonic options for you to choose from. Our Bulk Herb Spring Tonic Complete Kit includes everything you need to prepare your own spring tonic (includes herbs, jars, strainer). Our Bulk Herb Spring Tonic Herb Only Kit includes all of the bulk herbs needed for your spring cleanse. This kit is for those who already have their own strainer and jars or it can be used as a refill or for couples who want to buy extra herbs to do the cleanse together. We also offer a Spring Tonic Tincture. The tincture can be added to hot water or your favorite beverage and taken 2-3 times per day. You will need at least 4 oz per person for the cleanse. The herbs included in the cleanse are:
Burdock
root
is
a wonderful blood purifier and cleansing tea.
It cleanses the liver by stimulating the flow of bile.
This herb has also been used to treat skin problems such
as acne, psoriasis and eczema which are possible signs of an
imbalance in the liver.
Chickweed speeds fat metabolism and increases overall energy levels. Cleavers is another classic spring tonic. Cleavers purifies the blood, stimulates lymphatic drainage and is a strong diuretic. Dandelion Root is a very popular spring tonic and is a wonderful tonic for the liver and gall bladder. It has a mild laxative effect and increases iron absorption. Nettle Leaf is another popular spring tonic and it’s a very nutritive choice. This herb stimulates the kidneys, cleans the blood and is a great source of iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Nettles is a wonderful tonic for the whole body. Yellow Dock acts as a mild laxative and has a blood-cleansing effect. It is also high in iron.
To prepare your own Spring Tonic, follow the instructions below: To prepare herbs, pour 1 ounce of the spring tonic herb combo into the quart size Mason jar provided. The one cup mark on the side of the jar is roughly 1 oz of dried herb. Boil one quart (4 cups) of water. Pour boiling water over herb. Cover with lid and let it brew for 2-8 hours. Strain and drink or mix with root combo and drink. I usually prepare my herbal infusion before bed and strain it in the morning.
Roots
are prepared a bit differently. You still use 1 ounce of root to
one quart of water but roots are denser so 1 ounce would look
more like half of a handful instead of a full cup. Then
follow the same instructions above.
Two quarts will be enough to last for two days. Store in the refrigerator. It will keep up to 36 hours. If you drink 3-4 cups per day, the kit will last about 3 weeks.
